5 Facts about Sapphires
Many people know that sapphires are a precious gem, but not many know much more about them. Here are my favorite fun facts about sapphires:
1. They aren’t just blue
Although sapphires are most commonly found in a rich blue color, sapphires exist naturally in every color of the rainbow. When they are red, they’re called rubies!
2. They’re extremely durable
Sapphires score a 9 out of 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness, making them one of the strongest natural elements in the world. Because of their strength, sapphires make a beautiful and unique alternative for the center stone in engagement rings.
3. Heat treatment maximizes their color
Virtually all sapphires are heat treated before they are cut and polished. This causes a reaction in the mineral that gives gemstones their permanent color.
4. There’s a weight difference between diamonds and sapphires
A setting that holds a 1.00-carat diamond would need a 1.20-carat sapphire to fill the same space. This is why millimeter size is more important than carat weight in sapphires.
5. They hold a lot of meaning
Traditional blue sapphires are the birthstone for September and the customary 45th wedding anniversary gift, so they are perfect for gifting. Sapphires have also been referred to as a “royal gem” and they are believed to symbolize truth, sincerity and faithfulness.
