How to Keep Your Engagement Ring Safe

By  |

Your engagement ring is likely one of your most prized possessions. Here are five tips to help keep it safe!

1. Bring it to us frequently

When you bring your engagement ring into Shane Co., we check the prongs around your stones to make sure everything is secure and we also clean your ring so it sparkles like new. Bonus: These checkups and cleanings are completely free.

2. Know when to take it off

Your diamond is almost indestructible, unless you spend your free time knocking it against other diamonds. However, the gold is not indestructible. The chemicals you use while cleaning can erode the metal, making it look duller. You should also be careful when cooking; if you knead biscuit dough while wearing your engagement ring, there is going to be dough in every nook and cranny.

3. Store it properly

Be careful with where you store your engagement ring. Setting it on the sink, a nightstand or the windowsill is not safe, as the ring can easily get lost. Invest in a ring holder to keep it safe.

4. Take care when cleaning your ring at home

Rumors are not always true, and that goes for home ring cleaning tips too. Lathering your engagement ring in toothpaste or dusting it with baking soda and putting it in the oven is a mistake. If you want to clean your ring at home, try one part dish soap and five parts warm water. Soak your ring for five minutes, take it out and scrub it with a soft-bristled toothbrush dipped in the solution. Rinse, dry, and marvel at the sparkle.

5. Get insurance

Even if you are very careful with your engagement ring, accidents happen. Insuring your engagement ring will protect it if a worst-case scenario ever does occur. Ring insurance can often be purchased as an extension to your renters or homeowners policy. Get your ring appraised, and that will help you find a policy that works for you.
